Music and Writing Empty Music and Writing

Post by Mac Thu Aug 04, 2011 3:51 am

Most of the time when I write, I write while listening to music or the sound of rain (usually when no song will fit the mood of the scene I'm writing). I wondered whether anyone else does?

I was writing something about the Antagonist wanting to pass a law regarding State of Emergencies, when I put the sound of rain on Youtube and in the comments, it told me to put 'Apologize' by OneRepublic. I quite liked that mix actually Smile

Sometimes I prefer silence, but sometimes I put on some music to get into the right mood and help the ideas flow. I usually listen to music without lyrics while writing because otherwise it can be distracting.
The sound of rain... I'll have to try that.

I think that the lyrics help me because I like it when they talk about things that relate to my novel in terms of mood, sad songs for the sad scenes, hopeful songs for the hopeful, happy for happy, romantic for - actually I don't want to talk about the romantic scenes in my novel. They need a lot of help!

I find them helpful when I'm planning the story.

I get ideas while walking around my room, listening to my iPod.
But I never write with the music on, it just distracts me.

If I listen to music when I write, it has to be instrumental. Otherwise, the lyrics distract me and I start doodling a dog or a cat or something in the corner of my page.
However, when not writing and when just walking down the street or something, the music sometimes gives me ideas.

Talking about getting ideas while outside... My biggest source of inspiration came halfway from Asda (the British version of Wal-Mart as it's owned by the same country). It inspired about 7,000 words of my awful first novel Smile

Yes, One Republic once got me to write about 10.000 words in just a couple of hours.

Yeah, I find walking around the house with my iPod on, gives me ideas. When I'm writing, I usually listen to music to tune out noise.

Hmm, I think I'll check One Republic on YouTube, they sound like a great band.

Same here! What song was it? I was listening to Apologize at the time...

You guys were right, instrumental does help a lot. I'm listening to Halo at the moment, one of my favourite songs of all time.

I get a lot of ideas when I go for a walk. The sea also inspires me.
